Chris Wiegard, Dec 24, 2009, 12:02PM ESTthanks for recommending my post on the disappearing snows of Kilimanjaro, David.

Steve B., Dec 19, 2009, 11:17AM ESTThanks for the update, David. I'm sure raising 3 kids is a challenge. But you seem the kind of guy that would be a super dad. I haven't seen your other article, but I'll look it up.

Sarah A. Non Sequiturs, Digression and Circumlocution, May 6, 2009, 1:22PM EDTI'd get a copy of Patsy Cline "Walking After Midnight"... Though actually now is the time to get World Playground's Planet Sleeps CD - lullabies from around the world. Some of them are in pentatonic scales, I believe - my son loves music from all over now - a lot of which doesn't sound like music to western ears. (He's 20)
Both my parent's were chemists - Dad PhD in PChem from Rochester, my mother MA Organic from Columbia. They met working on the Manhattan project. I was indeed a Banana Slug, then at Institute of Molecular Biology at Oregon for awhile - never finished my doctorate. The Eugene town mascot is *also* the banana slug (which is OK with me - I think they're cool)
Don't write off the ocean CD yet - I believe from your pings that this little one is very new? They don't cease entirely to sleep until a little later. Ocean is safer than cars, less hassle than setting them on the dryer. I used to think I was going to float away! -
Sarah A. Non Sequiturs, Digression and Circumlocution, May 5, 2009, 10:04PM EDTWell, I turned him in - not just on my own behalf (my biologist days are long behind me) but because just once I'd like to read a post on climate change without his incessent yammering
btw I took Marine Mammals at UC Santa Cruz from the great Ken Norris - amazing place, amazing class, amazing guy.... He'd actually stroll down the beach, pick up a bone and recognize a new species. X. norrisii... -
David K., May 4, 2009, 5:58PM EDTThanks for your ping. I like the comment idea, though I agree it probably wouldn't work on such a simplistic site as Gather. And for most people it would be distracting from the free flow of mostly mundane (and often inane) conversations. Not everyone is here for intellectual stimulation; most are here purely for the community and entertainment value (and the gift cards). So the site needs to be able to handle both.
In all honesty, I go back and forth between spending too much time here and being cognizant of spending too much time here. In fact, I'm absolutely positively not supposed to be here right now anyway since I have a critically more important priority. So I won't be on much for a while.
When I come back I do want to revisit the issue in the email you sent me a while back. It seems a worthwhile topic, and I'd like to help in any way I can. -
Steve B., Apr 19, 2009, 2:03PM EDTCongratulations, David - to you and your wife. Very glad to hear that you little daughter is well. I know that must have been a very anxious time for the two of you. I'm sure you won't be sleeping well for the forseeable future - but at least it won't be due to anxiety.

David K., Apr 19, 2009, 1:02PM EDTI was just thinking about you yesterday. Glad that things seem to have turned out okay after your scare. Congratulations to you and your wife!! Hope to see you around when you get a breather.

Chris Wiegard, Apr 15, 2009, 9:30PM EDTDavid, I am assuming you are a new dad- I am sure that you will be wonderful at this new activity, based on your positive, humanistic, and thoughtful approach to life. All the best!
Here's hoping you can catch up on sleep in a few weeks! -
Cheri Cabot, Apr 14, 2009, 1:23AM EDTI just saw the ping about a baby coming too...How exciting! Spread the news with details!
